This paper examines the scope and purpose of eighteen subfields of classic, interdisciplinary and applied conservation social sciences and articulates ten distinct contributions that the social sciences can make to understanding and improving conservation. It focuses on both the biological and social factors that affect the success of conservation efforts and on determining ecosystems and species whose conservation is a high priority. Using a research method known as horizon scanning, our panel proposed, debated, and ranked 96 issues for 2024, scoring each based on its potential positive or negative effects on biological conservation, and its novelty. We address this gap by outlining and critically interrogating current discussion around transformative change in biodiversity conservation and highlight the crucial role of critical social science within this agenda.
