As i said, a brand new nikon battery i just received had 1% charge remaining, almost completely depleted. if a battery stays on the shelf for a while, that 1% could go down to essentially 0. that may be a new practice for nikon, as i don't think previous batteries were so depleted. it used to be having around 1 3 of the way charged.

If you can take it apart, toss the macro lens part away and keep the slide holder. find a macro lens that can handle 1:1.5 (0.67x) (ie: 60mm micro nikkor or 50mm micro nikkor with m2 ring, or 50mm 1.7 with 25mm extension). attach the slide holder to the macro lens via a tube. nikon k rings are the best.
