Oral Histories Indigenous Chicago Many oral histories were conducted at “oral history days” co hosted by the american indian health services of chicago; others were conducted at powwow booths, in people’s homes, at their workplaces, and at the newberry. Interviews conducted in relation to the newberry's 2024 "indigenous chicago" project and exhibition. audio recordings and transcripts are available on the newberry's digital collections platform (free registered account required for access).

Home Indigenous Chicago The indigenous chicago exhibition is open at the newberry until january 4, 2025. the project and website live on and serve as not only an educational resource, but a reminder that chicago is, and always has been, a native place. Today, chicago is home to one of the largest urban indigenous population in the united states, with more than 65,000 native americans in the greater metropolitan area and some 175 different tribes represented. The newberry library in chicago worked with a team, including many native researchers and advisors, to assemble an interactive ‘indigenous chicago’ curriculum. it features digital maps, activity modules, oral histories, and much more. Written for high school social studies classrooms, this five module curriculum helps students explore more than five centuries of indigenous history in chicago.
